SHOW INTENTIONS: Palimpsest: the not~so~blank slate

Throughout history, war and dominant cultures have attempted to silence ‘the other’s’ voice.   Books have been burned, hard drives wiped, sacred manuscripts written over, leaving only fragments of messages and meaning.  At the same time, humankind valiantly attempts to preserve traces of culture and history despite an overwhelming tide of new information that overwrites old information.

This erasure of the past may have either a beneficial or a negative impact.  We are looking for artwork that is interested in exploring the connections between the past and present. Artwork with a sense of history, and an exploration of layers of meaning.

The theme of the exhibition is an opportunity to question our relationships; with ourselves, each other, the animal kingdom, and the planet, and explore how those relationships are constantly being written over, leaving only traces of the past.  What is left for the curious are faint threads to follow and unravel.

Palimpsest: the not~so~blank slate invites artists to submit work that reflects traces of the past in their own work; whether it be through mark making, repurposing, erasure, patinas, and layers to the broader questions about history, loss of culture and voice.

We invite you to add your voice and narrative to those of fellow artists, exploring  the richness of culture, gender, race, or spirituality that continues to survive despite attempts at erasure or censorship, and to contribute to a larger conversation on the walls of our gallery.

All work will be juried by an independent juror: Regan Rasmussen.  Regan is a contemporary artist whose process is informed by the phenomenology of living experience and human interactions. She explores themes and narratives through drawing, ceramics, printmaking, and installation. Regan holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in studio and visual arts-based research from University of Saskatchewan, University of Manitoba, and the University of Victoria. Check out her work at https://www.reganrasmussen.com

Our goal for 2024 is to enhance our visual art exhibits by asking our artists to suggest song pairings that inspired their work or speak to it in some way. We create the playlists on YouTube and make them available to the public via a link on our website. We are interested in listening to the playlist our artists choose of music which has influenced and inspired their investigation into the theme of 'Palimpsest: the not ~so ~blank slate’. Your participation in the music selection activity is optional and the juror will not see your choice nor description of why you chose it.

The artist statement that is on your data page (email, phone number...) is just a short information statement about you as an artist.  This section only allows 300 characters. It is designed to say something about yourself. There is an opportunity later, in the submission form, to talk about what inspired you to create your submission(s).

For any sections that allow longer text we suggest you create it in a Word document and then cut and paste it into ArtCall as the website times-out in one hour and it's surprising how fast that can happen! Alternatively, be sure to update your submission frequently.

We charge a $10.00 submission fee per art piece.

If you are accepted to the show, there is an additional $10.00 per piece hanging fee which ArtCall calls the 'booth' fee, and which you will have to pay to be entered into the show. Please use the drop-down menu and request a  1x1x1 booth on the submission form.

We charge 30% commission on art pieces sold.

NOTE TO ARTISTS: ArtPod keeps participating artist information on file so that we can follow up with artists about this and other shows. We will not sell your contact information.  If you wish to be removed from this list, please email contact@metchosinartpod.ca with the title “Please remove me from ArtPod’s Participating Artists list".

ArtPod uses social media to promote your art. Please let us know if you do not want you or your work to appear on social media.

We look forward to seeing your artwork!

There will be a Show Opening Celebration on Saturday August 10th, 2024  from 2pm - 4pm which is open to all, and especially to participating artists who are invited to briefly speak about their pieces in the show. That is also where the Juror is introduced and invited to speak about their work and selection process. The three Juror's choice awards are presented towards the end of the event!
