Palimpsest: the not~so~blank slate

Welcome to Metchosin ArtPod's  ONLINE GALLERY for the juried show...

Palimpsest:

the not~so~blank slate

Throughout history, war and dominant cultures have attempted to silence ‘the other’s’ voice.   Books have been burned, hard drives wiped, sacred manuscripts written over, leaving only fragments of messages and meaning.  At the same time, humankind valiantly attempts to preserve traces of culture and history despite an overwhelming tide of new information that overwrites old information.

From the ever-changing layers of artworks that continue to evolve as they are impacted by the environment, to people's interventions leaving only traces of history, Palimpsest: the not~so~blank slate explores what was lost and what can be found in the traces that have been left behind?

The juror for this show is Regan Rasmussen. Check out her work at https://www.reganrasmussen.com...

The web gallery is where you can vote for your favourite piece in the show. At the end of the show's run, votes are tallied and a People's Choice Award is presented to the deserving winner!

This show also exists in real life in Metchosin, BC, Canada, at Metchosin ArtPod. We highly encourage you to come see it  in person during its run from Friday August 2nd, 2024 to Sunday September 29th 2024. Dimensions: 12 x 12 x 1.5
Inspiration:: The swimmer invites us to join her on the beach. Her determination and athleticism have enabled her to overcome life in war-torn Britain and push that chaos behind her. From our point of view she is starting to fade away, but her sturdy stance and direct gaze remind us to be strong in the face of challenge.
Materials and Process:: Acrylic and photo transfer
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Diana Krall - Blue Skies

Dimensions: 20 x 20 x 0.75
Inspiration:: I was inspired both by wanting to explore my personal history of being a weaver when I first left art school, to discovering what could be unearthed, rediscovered and reimagined by cutting up some of my old paintings and weaving other paintings of mine into them. I am motivated to explore, really letting go, and not having expectations of a preconceived outcome. For this piece I chose two very different pieces of art, one vibrant still life and a dark moody portrait.
Materials and Process:: Acrylic paint on canvas

Dimensions: 24 x 36 x 0.75
Inspiration:: Layer upon layer, rubbing on, rubbing off, this technique followed by that technique, lost, until…I stumble upon a path that feels right. Still, the traces remain and are essential.
Materials and Process:: acrylic, collage, graphite, mark makers, chalk on canvas
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Testimony by Ferron

CA$5,000.00

Dimensions: 2 x 49 x 39
Inspiration:: This work grew out of engagement in UVic’s Anti-Violence Project’s Understanding Consent Culture Workshop in collaboration with Caroline Boileau. Developing boundaries helps us set guidelines for how we want to interact with others and creates space for engagement in self and community care. Visitors are invited to playfully engage with these blocks, which contain drawings from previous visitors, creating their own boundaries. Through this, visitors will create new palimpsests of meaning.
Materials and Process:: On blocks created out of repurposed wood, using permanent and acrylic markers, participants drew and wrote about their thoughts regarding boundaries in relationships.
Accompanying music/song and artist: : "Freedom", Jon Batiste

Juror's Choice Award

Dimensions: 20 x 20 x 1.5
Inspiration:: The title "past remains" refers to memory and its fluidity. For the past four years I've been witnessing my mother's transformation in personality and expression as her dementia has deepened. An additional influence is Sarah McLachlan's "I will Remember You" which rises in my memory when I explore the feeling and expression of "remembering".
Materials and Process:: books pages, acrylic paint, inks, pencil crayon on cradled panel - put down, lift off and blended
Accompanying music/song and artist: : I Will Remember You by Sarah McLachlan

Dimensions: 48 x 36 x 1.5
Inspiration:: This work explores how linguistic diversity shapes our culture, behaviours and consciousness. Language reflects the culture of people who use it. We evolve as we learn foreign languages and interact with people who speak them. Languages we learn consequently shape our own identity and play a role how we communicate and being perceived by others. Is it always our choice what we adapt and what is left behind? Does our linguistic diversity give us a sense of belonging or alienation?
Materials and Process:: Mixed Media - acrylic, graphite, ceramic stucco, paper, pencil & oil stick on canvas.
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Corazon Kintsugi - Eric Hilton & Natalia Clavier

Dimensions: 16 x 20 x 1
Inspiration:: The images in this series are inspired and a result of a visit to Krakow, Poland. Taken over two summers, specifically on the Bernatka Footbridge from Kazimierz to Podgorze on which gravity defying sculptures created by Jerzy Kędziora floated above and the love locks were secured on the fence below. The text layer is from an exhibit at the Oskar Schindler Factory Museum featuring the forgotten voices of the holocaust victims and survivors.
Materials and Process:: Printed using Epson SureColor SC-P800 printer with Epson UltraChrome HD inks on MOAB Entrada Rag Natural 190gsm, 100% cotton, acid-free paper.
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Conclusions by Wójciński/Szmańda Quartet

Dimensions: 20 x 16 x 1
Inspiration:: Oaxaca is like immersing oneself in palimpsest - every vertical surface is a patina of paint, layers of plaster, and papered graphics. It is a celebration of colour, texture, mark-making, and personal statement which inspires my ceramic practice. My photos of Oaxacan walls are printed on aluminium sheets to maximize the vibrancy and reflectiveness of the Mexican sun, and my accompanying pottery pieces evoke the texture, layers, colour and Oaxaca’s traditional architecture and clayworks.
Materials and Process:: A 20"x16" photo printed on aluminium, and a 9"x9" handbuilt, multi-fired stoneware ceramic moon jar with layers of slip and underglaze.

CA$30.00

Dimensions: 7 x 4 x 4
Inspiration:: I am fascinated by topography maps and how they mimic the sensual forms of bodies. Goblets are similarly sensual, giving the experience of drinking from them another simension. I also love the play of adjacent colours in a series, such as the colours of a prism, and feel they reflect how we as people are affected by the edges of life that touch upon them.
Materials and Process:: Clay, underglaze, glaze, sgrafitto technique

CA$40.00

Dimensions: 4 x 6 x 6
Inspiration:: Assorted vases and bowls individually priced. Part of the latest series created to explore the colours of the prism and how these affect and are affected by adjacent colours, much as people are affected by interactions with people and the environment around them. These colours are layered on and scraped away to reveal an underlying topography using a technique called sgrafitto. Individually priced.
Materials and Process:: Clay, underglaze and glaze. Sgrafitto technique.
